Cold weather tyres improve traction and reduce stopping distances in temperatures below 7°C

Cold weather tyres have a different compound and tread pattern to give them extra grip in cold, wet and icy conditions. Summer tyres in the same conditions become harder, less ‘elastic’ and consequently suffer from reduced performance.

Braking tests at 19mph on an icy road have shown that a car equipped with cold weather tyres will stop a full eleven metres sooner than a car fitted with standard tyres.
